| Car Rentals in Cancun: You DO NOT need a 4WD vehicle for travel to Playa Sonrisa The beach road is rough, but passable, even in stormy conditions. However the extra clearance provided by an SUV may make the trip to & from town more comfortable. Most of the major rental companies like Avis, National & Budget have agencies in Cancun, but there are also a number of small companies that may or may not be more economical on a given day, and may or may not provide service "just as good" or "just as bad" as the big ones. (How's that for a disclaimer? We've heard very good & very bad stories about the majors & independents alike, but that applies to car rentals everywhere - not just in Mexico). Warning> Do NOT rent from Hertz They have a contract clause prohibiting travel "off pavement" and used that excuse to Royally Screw a guest who's car broke down for mechanical reasons unrelated to our beach road.
